Having a pool at home means enjoying, relaxing, and creating unforgettable moments with family and friends. But to keep it in perfect condition, it is essential to perform proper maintenance throughout the year, both during the months of heavy use and the off-season.

Here we explain how to care for your pool in summer to keep it clean, safe, and ready for swimming all season long.

During summer, the pool becomes the centerpiece of the home. However, frequent use, heat, and exposure to the sun mean it requires extra attention.

1. Daily inspection and cleaning
Remove leaves, insects, and debris with a net.
Clean the bottom and walls at least once a week with a manual or automatic pool vacuum.

2. Chlorine and pH control
Keep the chlorine level between 1 and 3 ppm to prevent algae and bacteria.
Check the water’s pH (it should be between 7.2 and 7.6) to ensure swimmer comfort and the effectiveness of chemical treatments.

3. Water filtration
Run the filtration system for 6 to 8 hours a day.
Clean the filters regularly to maintain good performance.

4. Algae prevention
Use preventive algaecides and promptly clean any signs of green algae on the walls or in the water.

5. Night protection
Cover the pool at night with a tarp or pool cover to prevent evaporation and keep it cleaner longer. (Recommended)

Evaporation care
In summer, due to heat, the water level can drop quickly. It is important to check the water level daily. It should be at least halfway up the skimmer to ensure proper filtration system function. If it drops too low, refill with water and then recheck the pH and chlorine levels.

Shower before entering
Showering before swimming reduces the amount of organic residues such as sunscreen, sweat, and cosmetics. This improves chlorine effectiveness and helps keep the water cleaner longer.

Chlorine under the sun: beware of UV radiation
Sunlight degrades chlorine very quickly. To avoid this, it is recommended to use chlorine stabilizers (cyanuric acid) that prolong its effectiveness. It is also advised to add chlorine at dusk or during the night when there is no direct sunlight.

Shock chlorination
Every two to three weeks, or after a storm or heavy use, it is advisable to perform shock chlorination. This involves adding a higher dose of chlorine to eliminate bacteria, oils, or invisible algae. The pool should not be used for 24 hours or until chlorine levels return to normal.

Watch for signs of contaminated water
If the water becomes cloudy, has a strong chlorine smell, or algae appear, quick action is needed. Check filters and chlorine and pH levels, perform shock chlorination, and clean the bottom and walls.

With all this information, you are ready to keep your pool in perfect condition all year round. Now all that’s left is to fully enjoy it and make the most of those relaxing and fun moments outdoors.
