Which is the best heating system for our house?

Winter, the coldest time of the year.

For this we have to be prepared and know the best way to heat our home.

There is no single correct answer to the question of whether there is the best way to heat a home, as it will depend on several factors, such as the characteristics of our home, our heating needs and the investment we are willing to make.
For this we must take into account the size of the house, its orientation, the insulation, the use and time we are going to give it, the climate of the area, the prices of all the energies, maintenance of the installations, that they are suitable for the environment, etc.

Furthermore, we must bear in mind that the most used system is not always the most efficient. Often, because we do not want to spend on installation, we choose the most convenient method, when in fact, in the long run, it would be more cost-effective to choose another heating system. Therefore, we should not focus so much on the initial investment as on the energy savings that we will obtain in the long term.

We present several methods of heating systems:

* Air-conditioned heating

The air-conditioning system can generate both heat and cold and is ideal for coastal or inland areas with mild temperatures. This system blows out warm air at the desired temperature and is quite efficient, especially with the new Inverter systems. The disadvantage is that the air expelled is usually quite dry, so it is not recommended for people with respiratory or mucous membrane problems. It is possible to air-condition specific points, and many homes already have it installed by duct in almost all rooms. This way is ideal if we only want to air-condition specific points of the house and not the whole house, as in this case we would have to install different indoor appliances in the main rooms or opt for a duct system. In the latter case, the ducted system requires building work. However, if the house is not too large and has open spaces that allow air to circulate easily, a single air conditioning unit (Split) may be sufficient.

* Gas boiler + Radiators

Gas boilers use natural gas (or town gas) as a fuel to heat water, which can be used for heating the house and/or for heating domestic hot water (DHW). The gas heating system is based on a water circuit that passes through the whole house and heats the whole house evenly through radiators.The great advantage of these boilers is that large houses can be heated even in areas with very cold climates without any problem. The gas boiler system with radiators is the most widely used system in Spain.Oil-fired boilersThis is an alternative system to gas boilers. Oil-fired boilers run on diesel and can be used for both domestic heating and domestic hot water DHW.Their main advantage is their high efficiency and low installation costs compared to gas boilers. Some of their disadvantages, on the other hand, are the higher price of the fuel and the fact that they do not have a supply like gas or electricity: diesel has to be bought, transported and stored at home.

* Electric boilers + radiators or underfloor heating

Electric boilers heat water using electricity, so we avoid any problem of gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, we do not depend on the supply reaching our area and we save the cost of installing natural gas.Like gas or oil boilers, electric boilers are used for both heating and domestic hot water heating (DHW).

* Biomass or pellet cookers

Biomass heating uses a boiler that extracts energy from the biomass in a sustainable and clean process. The operation of a biomass boiler is equivalent to that of a gas boiler. This type is another alternative when there is no natural gas supply at home. This type of cooker also has a high calorific value and generates very little waste. Their fuel comes from organic and biological waste such as wood-burning cookers, olive pits, nut shells, forest waste or the well-known pellet cookers that use compacted sawdust (pellets). There are also models available for wood, whoever prefers to be more rustic, in all cases, we need to continuously buy firewood or pellets and we need to have a certain amount of space to store them.
