What is the N.I.E.?

In Spain, any foreigner wishing to carry out certainlegal or administrative activities needs to obtain a NIE (ForeignerIdentification Number). This number is personal and exclusive, and it isnecessary to carry out many procedures, both for residents and non-residents.

Here are some situations in which a foreigner needs toobtain a NIE:

Work, create or manage a company, access public services (healthcare, etc.), purchase property, open bank accounts, carry out tax procedures, handle inheritances or donations, study, engage in notary procedures, and contract or change ownership of utilities, among others.

What do I need to obtain a NIE?

The requirements to obtain a NIE can vary depending onthe applicant's situation, but generally include:

-A valid passport or valid identification document. Original and one photocopy.
-A recent color photograph of the applicant's face, size 32 by 26 millimeters, with a plain white background, taken from the front with the head completely uncovered and without dark glasses or any other clothing that could prevent or hinder identification.
-Justification for why you need the NIE (e.g., employment contract, purchase of a property, studies, etc.).
-Form EX-15, duly completed. This form is available on official government websites.

Where to obtain the NIE?

The procedure to obtain the NIE can be done at theImmigration Offices or Police Stations. In the Valencian Community, you can go to the following offices:
In total, within the Valencian Community, you can find Foreigners' Offices andNational Police Stations in the main cities, such as Valencia, Alicante,Castellón, as well as some smaller offices in Gandía and Elche. These officesare mainly distributed in provincial capitals and other key urban areas.

Steps to apply for the NIE:

First, you must apply for an appointment at the following link: APPOINTMENT

On the date of your appointment, go to the corresponding office with all the required documents (passport and copies, form EX-15, justification for the reason, photos, and payment receipt).
The fee must be paid before the appointment. The payment must be made at the bank, and the payment receipt must be presented on the day of the appointment. This fee can be found together with the EX-15 form on the same link where the appointment is requested.
Once the formalities have been completed at the corresponding office, the NIE will be assigned. In some cases, you will be given the number on the same day; in others, you may receive it by post.

What to do if you lose or need a new NIE card?

If you already have a NIE but lose the card or need anew one, you will have to go through a similar procedure as when you firstobtained it. An application must be made for loss or theft, and thecorresponding fee must be paid.

Additional considerations:

It is important to make sure you have all your documents in order before your appointment to avoid delays or rejections.
The NIE is personal and non-transferable, and its use must be related to the procedures for which it was requested.
